Z Cam will no doubt have a busy month. Not only has it just announced its end-to-end VR bundle with Scratch VR, but it also showed off its newest camera, the Z Cam V1 Pro, for the first time at NAB 2017, and—get this—it’s shipping in May. This month. In just weeks.

Specs for the Z Cam V1 Pro

The cinematic 3D 360 VR camera can capture 8K monoscopic video and 7K stereoscopic video and features nine lenses—eight in a horizontal circle and one pointed upwards.

We got to watch some samples from the Z Cam V1 Pro while at NAB, and it really is comfortable stereoscopic video, which isn’t always the case.

The camera will also have an 10 gigabit Ethernet connection for fast file transfer and streaming, as well as a USB port.

The Z Cam V1 Pro offers five stops, between F2.8 and F11, to adjust aperture to various lighting conditions, just as the S1 Pro had.

“Adding that mechanical aperture gives you a lot more control, especially in scripted narrative environments where you can control lighting on the set,” said VR filmmaker and Z Cam customer Nick Bicanic.

Behind the lens of the Z Cam V1 Pro

This is Z Cam’s third camera. It brought the prototype of its first camera, the Z Cam S1 ($2,500), to NAB 2016 and shipped that camera in December. Then, it released a premium version of the S1, the Z Cam S1 Pro ($8,880), and now, the Z Cam V1 Pro.

“One reason I was so bullish was that I was so impressed with what Z Cam was able to pull off, not only on the hardware side, but also on the software side,” Bicanic said. “The stuff they’re doing with Wonderstitch and Wonderlive is a massive step forward for post workflow and the industry as a whole, not to mention the recently announced partnership with Assimilate and Scratch VR.”

Kinson Loo, CEO of Imagine Vision (which makes the Z Cam line of cameras) expects the Z Cam V1 Pro to cost between $30,000 and $40,000.

We will be posting samples from the V1 Pro in the near future. Stay tuned.
