Last we saw, LucidCam was on Indiegogo touting 1080p per eye stereoscopic video. At NAB 2017, LucidCam announced a sizeable upgrade. The iPhone-sized camera can now capture 180 x 180 degree stereoscopic video at 4K per eye (30 fps).

The LucidCam can only capture 180 degrees of video, but its latest camera is capable of 180 degrees of 8K stereoscopic video.

New upgrades to the LucidCam

It is also now equipped for live streaming in HD via wifi when paired with a smartphone, or by micro HDMI with a computer.

Other improvements include improved image stabilization and a waterproof case for underwater use at depths of up to 12 meters. It also has 32 gigabytes of internal storage.

It’s also possible to combine three LucidCams into one rig to produce 360 stereoscopic video. We don’t have any specs yet, but stay tuned.

The camera can also be upgraded to capture 360-degree 3D video, when three LucidCams are mounted together.

Despite offering half the scene as 360 videos, there are certain benefits to capturing 180 degrees with the LucidCam.

Why 180 when 360 is an option?

What’s interesting about the LucidCam is, unlike many cameras chasing 360 at all costs, the individual LucidCam gives us 180 x 180 degrees—slightly beyond the average binocular visual field of the human eye (120 degrees) and twice the field of view of the Oculus Rift (90 degrees).

This accessory, sold separately, gives users a chance to attach their phones to the LucidCam as a viewfinder.

Of course, some immersion is lost when users turn their heads beyond what LucidCam captures, but producers regain at least some ability to frame their stories. And, the crew and extra kit has a place to hide-half of the whole scene.

LucidCam also makes a mobile clip to connect a smartphone to the back of a LucidCam as a viewfinder.

Developer kits are now available for purchase for $499 and are expected to ship in July.
