Google and NBC Universal have just announced a partnership to collaborate on 10 multi-episode VR projects, the first of which was a backstage tour of Vanderpump Rules (above). Other projects include original immersive content from Saturday Night Live and SYFY WIRE, as well as E!, NBC Sports, NBC News, Telemundo and USA Network.
NBC will use Google’s Jump platform for capturing immersive content with its GoPro Odyssey and Yi Halo camera rigs and automatic, cloud-based stitching.
“NBCU’s teams were able to easily capture engaging VR content using the latest VR Jump cameras,” said Amit Singh, VP of Business & Operations for VR & AR at Google. “And with YouTube, audiences can experience it on any device, bringing them closer to their favorite series.”
Although viewers will be able to tune in on their phones and desktops magic-window-style, these new experiences are meant to be viewed in VR. Some future projects will also be available in VR180, a content format Google began promoting last summer.
