When RED announced its Hydrogen One smartphone last month, it shared very few details about the phone’s capabilities. But, what it did share packed a lot of promise: nanotechnology that seamlessly switches between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games.
A recent video by YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) shows off what RED claims will be the finished look of the phone and gives us a few more details.
Although it doesn’t show the phone’s holographic capabilities in action (if it even could), the video does show Brownlee’s response to 4-view holographic content, at the 3:15 mark. Despite a mildly amused response, Brownlee says the content left him “at a loss for words.”
He also outlines the camera’s look and feel, as well as some visible features.
Perhaps the most interesting new announcement about the device is its modding system, which Brownlee says is like “Moto mods on steroids.” At around the 5-minute mark, we can actually see one of the mods, which adds a sensor and a lens mount to the device.
According to Brownlee, RED also expects the device to be “the future of small form factor cinema” with quality only surpassed by RED’s other cameras. We’ll have to see about that. We’ll also have to wait to see what it even means to be a holographic smartphone…
Here’s a quick review from the initial announcement:
According to the press release, Hydrogen One’s 5.7-inch display “features nanotechnology that seamlessly switches between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games.”
RED also said the phone will convert stereo sound into multi-dimensional audio. “Think 5.1 on your headphones,” it reads.
The press release also announced RED Channel to find 4-view holographic content, including movies, documentaries, games, shopping apps and more. It also alludes to being able to create .h4v content from the phone (or convernt 3D to .h4v).
What do you think? Is this the future of small form factor cinema? Let us know in the comments.
