There is quite a bit of new gear to talk about this week, including new cameras from 360Fly, two new 360 gimbals, a waterproof rig for GoPros and a new 66 MP 360 camera.
Since my last column, I’ve been shooting with the Insta360 Pro a lot (and I even got to shoot briefly with Sarah when she visited LA). Right now, I’m working on evaluating its other features, including live streaming, for the second part of my review. I’ve also been trying out an improved version of a dual camera mount for the DJI Mavic.
But, let’s talk about the new gear.
New cameras from 360Fly
When Facebook announced the Live 360 Ready cameras, they also revealed the 360fly 4K Pro, a new version of the 360Fly 4K capable of 4K live streaming. But 360Fly is actually also launching two other cameras: the 360Fly 4K H and the 360 4K Dual camera rig.
The 4K H is designed for mounting on helmets. It’s based on a customized 360Fly built into a high-end motorcycle helmet jointly designed by with Bell Helmets. With its flat shape, the 4K H can also be used as a body camera. The The number of pixels in an image, typically presented as a ratio of the total pixels on x axis to the total pixels on th... More is the same as that of a 360fly 4K at 2880 x 2880, but with a higher frame rate of 60fps. The 4K H is waterproof and dustproof with an IP67 rating.
360Fly is also launching the 4K Dual Camera rig. This rig uses two 360Fly 4K Pro units attached to a rig that can be configured with the 4K Pro cameras side by side (for 3D 180 capture) or back to back (for fully spherical 360 capture).
According to a 360Fly representative, these are for commercial or industrial use and are not intended for retail sales.
LeViteZer 360 gimbals
LeViteZer, a company based in Finland, is creating two gimbals for 360 cameras — one for consumers and another for professionals.
The 360 Compact model has a distinctive design that places the 360 camera at the end of a long arm. On the opposite side of the gimbal is a counterweight. Test videos on LeViteZer’s website show that it can keep a Samsung Gear 360 steady even with the user running up and down a staircase.
The 360 Compact can also stabilize the 360 camera horizontally or while inverted. LeViteZer hasn’t announced the pricing or availability yet.
They’re also producing a second gimbal, designed for professional 360 cameras such as the Nokia OZO. A sample video shows that the 360 Pro is able to stabilize the Nokia OZO, which weighs 4.2 kg. As with the 360 Compact, Levitezer hasn’t announced the pricing or availability.
Wethot 360 Rig
Wethot 360 is a new rig that uses six GoPro Hero 4 or Hero 5 Session cameras. When used with GoPro Hero 5 Session cameras, it can capture up to 8K (7940 x 3970) to 30fps. Because Session cameras are waterproof, the WetHot360 is also waterproof.
Another feature of the rig is that it has openings to allow the Session cameras to charge while recording.
Wethot 360 is not the first 360 rig for Session cameras. However, compared to the Spherical Solutions Orbi, Wethot 360 costs substantially less, at under $300. Wethot 360 is now available from Wethot’s eBay store.
