On Friday, YouTube made three big announcements regarding VR and 360 content. It introduced heatmaps for 360 videos with more than 1000 views, allowing creators to see what their viewers are looking at most and for how long. Although YouTube is a bit late to the heatmap game (Facebook began offering heatmaps for 360 videos in August of last year, and Vimeo launched the feature when it announced its support for 360 videos in March of this year), it’s an important feature that can help creators better understand what is most compelling in a 360 video.
YouTube also announced some early statistics based on 360 viewing patterns. For example, 75 percent of viewers’ time is spent watching the front 90 degrees of the video. However, the platform’s most popular 360 videos tended to have more engagement throughout the sphere, with users spending about 20 percent of time looking behind them.
It also announced its first VR intensive training program, at YouTube Space LA, called the VR Creator Lab. The three-month program offers training, one-on-one mentoring and $30K to $40K in funding.
Applications for the three-month program opened Friday, with the program’s bootcamp beginning in August.
