Late last month, Lucid–the company behind the 3D VR180 LucidCam–announced that its software would be powering a new 3D camera from RED Digital Cinema.
Today at Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, Lucid has announced that its proprietary AI-enhanced software enables smartphones with dual cameras to capture and stream immersive 3D, VR and AR content.
The software also gives these devices 3D depth-sensing capabilities, “eliminating the need for expensive and space-consuming hardware solutions such as depth sensors or other systems.”
The company’s software accomplishes this task with any dual camera device by “inserting a unique ‘vision profile’ during the manufacturing process,” says its press release. “This vision profile is similar to a personalized prescription anyone receives from an optometrist following an eye exam.”
“Like a baseball player who can train to improve his vision, the vision profile in dual cameras will also continue to get better through continuous learning,” said Lucid CEO Han Jin. “In this way devices attain exceptional visual perception without sophisticated hardware.”
According to Lucid, the company is already implementing this functionality into several mobile phones, cameras and robotics applications.
We’ll be sure to share more details as they become available.
