The Online News Association has just opened entries for the 2018 Online Journalism Awards, and the Excellence in Immersive Storytelling category is back!
The category was first launched during entries for the 2017 awards. Here’s a description of the category:
This award honors exceptional efforts in telling stories through digitally focused immersive media: virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, 360 video, or other emerging media. Judges will consider the journalism behind an immersive project, overall production quality, and innovative use of storytelling techniques. Judges also will give special attention to the handling of ethical considerations for immersive works and successful audience engagement efforts on digital and mobile platforms. A cash prize of $5,000 for this award is sponsored by Journalism 360.
This year’s awards offer $58,500 in prize money to winners in 37 different categories.
Work published between June 20, 2017 and May 31, 2018 is eligible for consideration, and entries close June 7. Some eligibility requirements have been updated since last year, so check out those changes here.
ONA is a partner behind Journalism 360, an initiative to offer immersive journalism training, foster a community around the subject, and promote the overall growth of the emerging medium, along with Google News Lab and the Knight Foundation.
